Five Legendary Moments From Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince of Darkness

This Wednesday, July 22, Birmingham is throwing the city’s first-ever Ozzy Day. It’s the one-year mark since the Prince of Darkness passed, and his hometown is turning the Black Sabbath Bench, the museum, the whole city center into one big tribute. Feels like the right week to sit down and go through the stories that made Ozzy who he was.

Because here’s the thing nobody tells you about legends. It’s not the albums that get passed down first. It’s the stories. The stuff parents heard about and immediately decided this guy was a bad influence. So let’s run through the moments that built the legend, the ones that made him the most gloriously unhinged frontman rock ever produced.

1. He bit the head off a bat

January 20, 1982, Des Moines, Iowa. This is probably the biggest, most known legend about Ozzy. A fan threw something on stage that Ozzy assumed was a rubber toy, the same kind of thing fans had been lobbing at him for a year already. He picked it up and bit down. It was not rubber. It was a real, very dead bat, and Ozzy spent the rest of that tour getting rabies shots in both cheeks, both thighs, both arms, every single night. He always said it was an honest mistake. Doesn’t matter. The story became bigger than the man, and it never let go.

2. He bit the heads off two doves, in a record label boardroom

Okay, so while the bat might not have been intentional, this one just escalated. A year before the bat, Ozzy walked into a CBS Records sales meeting with doves tucked in his jacket, planning to release them as a peace offering to the suits who weren’t sure his solo career was worth the investment. He was drunk, he was bored, and somewhere in the middle of the meeting he bit the head off one dove, then the other, and spit them on the table. He got thrown out of the building. Blizzard of Ozz went on to sell millions. Sharon always said it was the best marketing they never planned.

3. He got arrested at the Alamo

February 1982, San Antonio, wearing one of Sharon’s dresses because she’d hidden all his clothes to keep him from wandering off after a show. He wandered off anyway and relieved himself on the Alamo Cenotaph. Texas did not find it funny. He got banned from performing in the city for a decade and didn’t set foot back on the site for over thirty years. He later called it one of the things in his life he genuinely regretted, and made peace with the city with a donation to help preserve the monument.

4. He turned his living room into the most influential show on MTV

By 2002, Ozzy had spent two decades as rock’s resident chaos agent, and then MTV put a camera in his house and something nobody expected happened. The Osbournes became the highest-rated show in the network’s history, the family stumbling through dog messes and broken remotes and Ozzy grumbling his way through breakfast like a confused dad instead of a Prince of Darkness. It cracked reality TV wide open. Every celebrity-at-home show that came after, from the Kardashians on down, owes something to a guy who couldn’t work his own television.

5. He closed it out on a throne, unable to stand, and gave everything he had left

July 5, 2025, Villa Park, Birmingham. Ozzy’s body had been through more than most people’s could survive, spinal surgeries, a Parkinson’s diagnosis, decades of wear he’d talk about openly. He couldn’t walk onto that stage. He came up on a riser, seated on a custom gothic throne with a bat’s head carved into it, and he sang anyway. Five songs solo, then one last set with the original Black Sabbath lineup for the first time in twenty years. He gave that crowd everything that was left in the tank. Seventeen days later, he was gone.

That last one is the one that stays with me. Ozzy spent a lifetime chasing oblivion, and by his own account it should have killed him a hundred times over. It very nearly did, more than once. But he also spent years getting sober, staying sober, and talking about it honestly instead of pretending the wild years were the whole story. The man who bit the head off a bat is the same man who sat on that throne fighting a disease that his own hard years helped bring on, and sang his heart out one more time for the city that raised him. That’s not a contradiction. That’s just who Ozzy was.

Prince of Darkness, working-class kid from Aston, gone but very much not forgotten. Rock on, wherever you are.

Rock on, Sam 🤘
